Atlantis is a community ravaged by domestic violence emanating from a plethora of social ills such as unemployment, poverty and substance abuse. About two decades ago a local unionist, Fred Wyngaardt was approached to establish a safe house for victims of abuse. The Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (SACTWU) sponsored the house which is now a shelter for abused women and children. United Sanctuary Against Abuse (USAA) has evolved into a well governed organisation and is now registered and subsidised by the Department of Social Development of South Africa.
Left: Rachel Watson a seasoned Unionist, Activist, Radio Communication Specialist and Station Manager at Radio Atlantis is now at the helm of USAA as Chairperson of the Board.
Our objectives are to provide:
A shelter for abused women and their children.
Counselling and support for the victims of abuse.
Capacity building, personal development and economical empowerment programmes to assist women to re-enter society.
Increase community awareness and involvement in issues relating to domestic violence.
